Can A Person With Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Work Productively As Network Computer Specialist /computer Forensics?
Does work in Computer networking or computer forensics require so much use of keyboarding and typing ,or intricate work that it would be too physically demanding for someone with Carpal tunnel syndrome in both hands?
Hi dsjnix,
A person with Carpel Tunnel can work effectively as a Network Specialist.
Contrary to popular belief the repeating actions required for use of a keyboard and mouse are not a major contributor to Carpal Tunnel. In fact, you can wear the Carpal Tunnel braces and still work effectively with a keyboard and / or a mouse.
The actions that really aggravate Carpal Tunnel are any involving bending the hand downward and pinching the nerves in the bottom of the wrist.
Norm
I may disagree with Norm. It depends upon the carpal tunnel symptomology. If the problem arose from repetitive use of a keyboard, a job as a network admin would reinforce/recreate the problem. Any computer job is going to take some keyboarding. No way viable way around it. BUT; you can reduce the effect on carpal tunnel in several ways. First, use an ergonomic keyboard. Second, a typist/secretary uses a keboard about 8 times as much in a day as a network admin. Computer forensics, even less. Hardware guru… almost none. Third, take a break from the keyboard regularly.
