I Can’t Find Any Colleges That Offer Doctoral Programs In Forensic Science. Are There Any Colleges That Do?

I live in New Jersey, so I need a college that is at least on the east coast.

  1. What are your plans re: this doctorate? There’s not much of a market for people with a PhD forensic science. In fact, I’ve only heard of a couple of PhD programs, and those are on the west coast. If there are any here, they’d be at John Jay, and at Northeastern, both of which have long standing criminal justice programs.
The track that most people in the field follow is a BS in a lab science (chem, biochem, biology, etc.), an MS in their lab science or in forensic science, and a PhD in a lab science. There are some combined MS forensic science/PhD in your lab science programs, which can save a bit of time.
Usually, if you want to enter (or teach in) a specific field involved in forensics, you study that specific field. So if you wanted to be a forensic psychologist, you study psych, and focus on forensics as you do so. If you want to be a Criminalist in a lab (like the CSI people do on tv), you need to have a reputable BS in a science with lab work, plus an MS usually in that science, but the option does exist, as I mentioned, to do the MS in forensic science.
You need to know what the employers (academic or otherwise) in your field want in terms of graduates. And that’s usually a BS in a lab science (not forensics, but in chem or etc.) an MS in that science (or maybe in forensics), and if a PhD, then the PhD in the lab science (and NOT in forensics).

  2. John Jay (it’s in new york city)
