I Have 2 Felonies And I Want To Work In Law Enforcement?

I live in Michigan. When I was going up I wanted to be either a Nurse or Cop. I decided to be a Nurse. In 2004 I was convicted of Attempted Uttering and Publishing. In 2005 I was convicted of Unarmed Robbery. I am 45 years old and I had a perfect record prior to 2004 and I have had nothing since 2005. The judge even told me that usually they can look at someones record and guess where they are going, but with me, he had no idea, because I have absolutely nothing on my record, not even a speeding ticket. I do believe that is what saved me from going to prison, but I did spend 6 months in jail. While I was in jail my nurses license lapsed. At first I wasn’t going to try and get it back because of my felonies, but last Year decided to write to the nursing board and ask for my license back. I was honest about my felonies and they did an extensive background check, and they STILL gave me back my license. Although I haven’t worked as a nurse since I got my license back, I still did get it back, because they look at every ones situation. I really don’t want to work as a nurse at this point, I just wanted my license because I had earned it. What I really want to do is work with Law Enforcement. Not as a cop, but as a Computer Forensics Investigator. I am currently enrolled in school and studying Computer Information Systems and planning on getting a Bachelors in CIS with a specialty in Computer Forensics. Ok I think I have given enough information.. Please all I ask is that no mean comments. I already know I messed up and it will most likely affect me for the rest of my life.. I am just looking for any advice from any Law Enforcement people or people who know the laws that pertain to this sort of thing. Thanks for all your help.

  1. As for a law enforcement officer, there are two issues against you. First, you are not going to pass the background investigation, due to the 2 felonies. Secondly, must departments have an age cutoff of 32 years old, with the exception of some Sheriff’s Departments. As long as you are already law enforcement certified and are already in law enforcement before the age of 32, you can still work in the field. If you are looking in the forensics field, I would contact the school you wish to attend and speak to a school counselor and they should be able to tell you if you qualify to enter the field with your record. Wish I could be of more help.

  2. You’ll never be a cop or anyone associated with criminal justice or law enforcement.
Especially in Criminal Investigations or Computer investigations.
A person with 2 felony convictions is not an honest and credible person, which are two requirements to get into and stay in this business.
